St Andrews Old Course (est. 1754)
Yards: 6566 Holes: 18 Par: 72
Being in the Carnoustie country area, the chance to play the famous Old Course at St Andrews should not be missed. It is not easy to obtain an advance, booked tee time but golfers visiting the area can put their names forward for the daily ballot as long as they are prepared to "nip over" to St Andrews if they are lucky.
Daily ballot results can be checked on the Internet, by phone, via St Andrews Links Committee or local tourist offices.
One of the hardest tests of golf for an average player must be teeing off at the 1st on the Old Course - but technically this is an easy opener. The Old Course does not favour any particular type of golfer as it demands a wide variety of shots and tests the full spectrum of your golfing skills.
A truly historic course that's famous the world over, St Andrews Old Course is for many the pinnacle of golf in Scotland. If you're planning a golf break in Fife or the surrounding area and you consider yourself a serious golfer, the Old Course should be top of your list of courses to play.
St Andrews Old Course Pro Tips
There is so much can be said about playing the Old Course at St Andrews, but to score well here you must be accurate from the tee, be a good bunker player, be a good putter - why?
The Old Course will test every aspect of your golf game. It has 112 bunkers, many of them hidden from view, many of them extremely hard. Another feature of the Old Course is the double greens where the outward and inward holes are cut on the same putting surface. These greens are large, not surprisingly, and golfers can be faced with putts of almost 100 yards - good luck, and enjoy.
