Golfers From Across the Globe Celebrate the Bicentenary of Royal Montrose Golf Club
| 31 August 2010 |
| On Sunday, August 29, almost 100 golfers from all over the world were welcomed to Royal Montrose Golf Club’s Week of Celebration, which runs until Friday, September 3. The Week of Celebration marks the 200th anniversary of the founding of Royal Montrose Golf Club and has GlaxoSmithKline as its key sponsor, with support provided by, amongst others, Angus Council through Carnoustie Country, which promotes the golf courses in and around Angus. The Week of Celebration began with a Welcome Reception at the Park Hotel in Montrose, an event which was jointly sponsored by Carnoustie Country and Pro Simon, manufacturers of Carnoustie Country golfwear in China, who have gifted the club 200 Carnoustie Country and Royal Montrose Golf Club branded polo shirts specifically for the Week of Celebration. Club Captain Brian Ritchie explained that the golfers participating in the Week of Celebration are all members of Royal golf clubs. “Golfers have travelled to Montrose for our Week of Celebration from as far away as Australia, Czechoslovakia and South Africa, including members of Royal Wellington in New Zealand and Royal Colwood in British Columbia, Canada,” explained Brian, who added that the Week of Celebration is the culmination of the Royal Montrose Golf Club’s bicentenary festivities, which started on the stroke of midnight on December 31, 2009. “Since then, we’ve enjoyed a fantastic selection of memorable occasions both on and off the golf course, including the world’s second 25 Hole Golf Open and a visit by our Royal Patron, HRH The Duke of York. The Week of Celebration - which also features four golf tournaments and a Bicentenary Ball - will ensure golfers from across the globe return home with very special memories of their time in Carnoustie Country, cradle of the game of golf, as guests of one of the world’s oldest golf clubs.” After being welcomed to Royal Montrose Golf Club’s Week of Celebration by Brian Ritchie and, on behalf of Angus Council, the Depute Provost of Angus, Councillor Peter Murphy, the golfers and their partners were treated to a delicious buffet which highlighted the quality and variety of Angus food. “The Welcome Reception was a wonderful opening event for the Week of Celebration and certainly provided our golfing visitors with a warm Angus welcome,” continued Brian Ritchie. ” The success of this evening bodes very well for the rest of our Week of Celebration.” More information about Royal Montrose Golf Club’s bicentenary events – and the Week of Celebration - can be found at: www.royalmontrosegolf.com. |
