Carnoustie Country Welcome for the Ricoh Women’s Open

Carnoustie hosts the Ricoh Women’s Open for the first time next week (28 - 31 July).
2009 champion and Carnoustie Country Ambassador Catriona Matthews will be among the field of top flight international women golfers teeing off next Thursday, 28 July.
Depute Provost of Angus Peter Murphy welcomed the championship to Angus saying: “Carnoustie was a hugely popular venue for the Seniors Open last year and we are looking forward to welcoming thousands more golf fans next week for the Women’s championship.
“It will be the first time the championship has been in Angus but I’m sure it won’t be the last. Carnoustie’s Championship Course is as always in fantastic condition and I congratulate the Carnoustie Golf Links Management Committee and the course staff for their year round hard work.”
Peter Burke, chair of the Carnoustie Business Association said the local community was also looking forward to welcoming competitors and spectators to the town: “Once again Carnoustie, the cradle of golf, plays host to a major championship and once again the townspeople of Carnoustie prepare to welcome the thousands of visitors.”
The Depute Provost said the championship would be a great showcase for Carnoustie Country golf. “Media coverage of the event will put Carnoustie Country golf in the spotlight again and we’re doing everything we can to promote the golf and leisure attractions of Angus to the expected 40,000 spectators at the event.”
Woodlands Primary School P6 pupil Charlotte White (pictured) has already done her own bit of promotion, designing a tournament poster that will be in the championship programme. Speaking about her winning artwork Charlotte said: “I feel really happy that I have won the competition. I never thought I'd win so it was a big surprise. My grandad plays golf and is really proud that I've won."
