A golfing break in Carnoustie Country need not mean leaving your family behind. While you take to the fairways, the area has plenty to amuse children of all ages.
Along with spectacular beaches to explore and vast country parks to hide in there are swimming pools, ice rinks and play centres all within a 30 minute drive or less of Carnoustie County’s golf courses.
Budding scientists can enjoy a fun hands-on experience at the Sensation Science Centre in Dundee, where they can explore the world through the five senses by walking through six zones themed around sound, touch, light, taste and smell, temperature and position or discover the wonders of the universe at Mills Observatory, Britain’s only full-time public observatory and planetarium.
History buffs will be captivated, by the sights and sounds of Dundee’s Jute industry past at Verdant Works, an award-winning Industrial museum with a stunning range of earth trembling machinery and intrigued as they delve into Scotland’s ancient past, through the legacy of the enigmatic Picts, at the Pictavia Visitor Centre in Brechin.
They’ll find all the fun of a seaside fair with dodgems and waltzers at Pleasureland in Arbroath, and at Montrose Seafront Splash there is plenty of water and sand to dip their toes in.
Waterside fun is not just limited to the seaside and no visit to the area would be complete without a trip to see Dundee’s most famous ships. At Discovery Point you can climb aboard The RRS Discovery and discover the world of adventure and the ship that took Captain Scott to the Antarctic.
And in the city’s beautiful quayside you can step back in time to the days of Trafalgar when you board the Frigate Unicorn, a 46 gun wooden warship - one of only four in the world still afloat.
All things locomotive can be embraced with Kerr's Miniature Railway with its steam and diesel locomotives, in Arbroath, and the Caledonian Railway at Brechin – which offers a short run through rural Angus to Bridge of Dun.
And while you enjoy a round at Camperdown, the rest of your clan can enjoy the largest public park in Dundee with its gorgeous 19th century mansion at its centre and a mass of facilities and activities for all the family. There you will find tennis courts, a boating pond, Horne’s fairground attractions and an adventure play area.
Also situated within Camperdown Park is Camperdown Wildlife Centre, home to around 50 species of animals, including brown bears, wolves and ring-tailed lemurs, to name only a few.
Carnoustie Country also has more than its fair share of bribery fodder in the shape of sweet treats. In Kirriemuir there is Visocchi’s Ice Cream Parlour and The Star Rock Shop who have been producing Starry Rock – a known favourite with Kirriemuir’s most famous son Peter Pan Creator JM Barrie – since 1833 and in Arbroath a visit to Sugar and Spice is a necessity with its good old fashioned sweets and home-made fudge made on the premises.
Carnoustie Country has much that you would expect to keep the family entertained, and much more.
