Imagine strong gusting sea breezes, deep bunkers, humps and hollows and plenty of rough and you are more than likely thinking about a British links course, probably in Scotland or even more specifically the Championship Course at Carnoustie.
The golf course in question is, however, not the famous 2007 Open Championship course but Tiger Beach Golf Links, a course that, although situated on the other side of the world in the Shandong Province in China, has more in common with Carnoustie and Scotland than you might think.
The County of Angus, of which Carnoustie is at the heart, was twinned with the city-region of Yantai in the Shandong Province in North-east China in 1999 and as this relationship developed, further connections between the two areas were made which led to the signing in 2002 of a Sister Links Agreement between Carnoustie Golf Links and Tiger Beach Golf Links.
Tiger Beach, which is owned by Beta Soong who also owns Shanghai Silport Golf Club, venue for the Volvo China Open in 1999-2004 and again in 2007, was even designed by Soong himself with advice and assistance from Carnoustie’s Head Greenkeeper, John Philp.
