Downfield golf course has a much-deserved reputation as an attractive and challenging parkland course. It is set in a mature estate on the outskirts of Dundee with a great variety of specimen trees. James Braid was responsible for the original course design, although some of his holes were lost due to nearby housing development.
The subsequent re-modelling of Downfield in 1964 was by no means a disappointment. There are many good par threes and fours but it is the five superb par fives that help set the Downfield course apart. The 11th is one of the truly great par fives in the country and is the signature hole of the golf course with two separate water features protecting a green which has many slopes and borrows.
Downfield has played host to many golf tournaments at national level, both professional and amateur. Paul Lawrie made history in 1999 as the first qualifier in the modern-day format to go on to win the Open after he came through final qualifying at Downfield.
All in all, Downfield golf course has a lot to offer the discerning golfer, and more than merits inclusion if you’re planning a golf break in Dundee or the surrounding area. Although not as well-known as some of the other golf courses in the vicinity, don’t let this put you off – Downfield golf course is greatly respected and admired by those in the know.
Good on-course management is the best way to play Downfield golf course. Be prepared to lose some distance for good ball placement but this will also assist you in playing the percentage game especially at the holes where water comes into play. Downfield is a golf course that rewards strategic play, so be prepared to give your golfing skills a real work out when you approach the course.
