James Braid created the exquisite gem that is Kirriemuir golf course on a hillside looking over to the beautiful Angus glens.
The course offers an admirable and highly enjoyable heathland/parkland layout, the perfect length for an entire day’s golf. The contours of each hole and arrangement for the course as a whole make for an undiminished golfing encounter. Avenues of woods, gorse and broom surround lush, undulating fairways with impeccable greens. The views, particularly from the 4th hole with Lochnager in the distance are inspiring.
Like many of the great golf courses, Kirriemuir’s best is reserved for the finish. The 17th and 18th are two fantastic holes. The 17th a 180 yds, par 3 is guarded by two majestic trees both left and right, this hole lives up to its name "Braid’s Gem".
Set against the splendid backdrop of the Angus glens, Kirriemuir golf course provides a real feast for the senses as well as a thoroughly enjoyable test of your golfing prowess. A little-known but much-appreciated destination for a short golfing break, Kirriemuir golf course has plenty to offer connoisseurs of Scottish golf.
Looking at Kirriemuir golf course can lull you into a false sense that it is short and easy. Resist the temptation to use the driver off the tee and play for position but be cautious with your approach shots as most of the greens are smaller than normal. Kirriemuir golf course brings rich rewards to the conscientious golfer, and is certainly one of the highlights of golf in Angus.
